SteinbachOnline.com: New historical art exhibit celebrates Steinbach’s Kornelsen School’s legacy

This article was originally published by SteinbachOnline.com: https://steinbachonline.com/articles/new-historical-art-exhibit-celebrates-steinbachs-kornelsen-schools-legacy The Steinbach Arts Council is inviting the community to attend the opening of a new art exhibit called “Past Meets Present: A Celebration of Creativity” on Friday afternoon.  The gallery exhibit will feature artwork created by students from Steinbach’s historic Kornelson School. Founded in 1878, the Kornelsen School has deep roots in the history of Steinbach. It was originally a primary school, and for many years, it was the heart of education in the community. In 1911, a larger, two-story building was constructed to serve all grade levels, but after the school closed in 1964, it was demolished, making way for newer educational facilities. Today, the Steinbach Arts Council (SAC) occupies one of the buildings that once housed the school, and the new exhibit is a tribute to both the history of the school and the young artists who are shaping the future.  Executive Director, David Klassen says, “We’re really excited to share this exhibit, which is a wonderful mix of the old and the new. It’s called ‘Past Meets Present,’ and it celebrates the history of the Kornelsen School through art made by past students. Some of these pieces were found by a local community member who was going through old family belongings. They’re from the time when Gerald Dyck, many of us know him, was teaching art at Kornelsen School.” Mr. Gerald Harry Dyck, taught Grade 7 students at the Steinbach Kornelson School from 1964 to 1968. (Manitoba Historical Society)  Klassen continued, “We’ve got pieces created by students, and it’s amazing to think about the art and creativity that has been part of this community for so many years. We really felt it was important to celebrate that history and continue the legacy of creativity here at the Arts Centre.”  The exhibit also shines a light on the building’s ongoing role in the community. While the building has changed over the years, the Arts Council has carried forward the spirit of creativity that was part of Kornelsen School’s original mission.  “It’s not just about the artwork on the walls, but the story of the space itself. The Kornelsen School, in whatever form it took, has been a place of learning and growth for generations of Steinbach residents. And now we’re continuing that tradition with programs and art classes for all ages.” The opening event on Friday afternoon is an opportunity for the community to reconnect with local history and celebrate young talent.   “We’re hoping that people come by, enjoy the artwork, and have a chance to visit with friends and former classmates, and Kornelson School Alumni. We’ll have coffee and muffins, and it’s a chance for everyone to come together and experience the creativity that has shaped Steinbach over the years.”  In addition to the historical pieces from the Kornelsen School, the exhibit will feature work from the Arts Centre’s Buy or Lease program. There will also be an opportunity to purchase artwork—just in time for the holidays—through the Centre’s Buy Local initiative.  “We’ve got artwork in all price ranges, from hand-painted cards to jewelry, and we really believe there’s something for everyone on your Christmas list,” Klassen said.  The Past Meets Present exhibit is open to everyone, and the Steinbach Arts Council hopes to see both newcomers and longtime community members at the event on Friday, November 22, from 1:00-3:00 PM at the Steinbach Cultural Arts Centre #304 2nd Street.   The Gallery Exhibit is open to the public and your donations are welcome. It runs until January 3, 2025. For more information about the exhibit or upcoming events, contact the Steinbach Arts Council at 204-346-1077.

Local Students Showcase Talent in New Art Exhibit Celebrating History

The Steinbach Arts Council invites the community to the opening of “Past Meets Present: A Celebration of Creativity” on November 22, 2024, from 1:00-3:00 PM at the Steinbach Cultural Arts Centre. This free exhibit, running until January 3, 2025, showcases artwork from students of the historic Steinbach Kornelsen School, offering a compelling journey through time and creativity. The Kornelsen School, founded in November 1878, holds a special place in Steinbach’s history. Named after teacher Gerhard E. Kornelsen, it served as the community’s primary educational institution for decades. In 1911, a two-story building was constructed to accommodate all grade levels until 1936. The original structure, closed and demolished in 1964, gave way to newer facilities, with the Kornelsen name living on through subsequent educational institutions. (Information from the Mennonite Archival Information Database) Today, the Steinbach Arts Council occupies one of these historically significant sites, bridging the past and present. “Past Meets Present” not only celebrates young artistic talent but also pays homage to the enduring legacy of Kornelsen School and its role in fostering creativity within our community. Visitors of the exhibit will experience this diverse array of artwork that reflects both our rich heritage and the innovative spirit of past students. A special section dedicated to alumni will provide insights into the building’s profound impact on the community over the years. We warmly invite all community members, especially former Kornelsen School students, to attend this meaningful event. The opening offers a unique opportunity to explore the artwork, reconnect with former classmates, and immerse yourself in the vibrant spirit of our community. Join us for an afternoon of nostalgia, artistic appreciation, and community celebration. We are very excited to feature new cultures and to embrace things that other groups have to teach us. What’s pretty special is that they are world-class musicians, performing right here in Steinbach.” Klassen adds that the SACS is still offering their “Wine Tasting” Fundraiser.  “We put food and wine in people’s homes and raise funds for the Steinbach Arts Council. It’s been a really popular fundraiser again.”  Bringing up the topic of their current Hallway Art Exhibit, Klassen notes that they’ve created more wall space within their facility, so they can put up more artwork.   “And, coming up we have a historic exhibit coming up in November, and we’re excited to talk about that. It’s going to be a really good opportunity for us to talk about the history of this building (the former Kornelson School) and the history of art in our community.”  Klassen encourages local amateur artists to submit their applications for the 2025 Southeast Open Judged Exhibit starting on November 14, 2024, with the exhibition taking place from February 28 to March 28, 2025.   The Steinbach Arts Council’s Winter Class registration is coming up next week, and Klassen says,  “Take a look at all of the classes. We have approximately 140 classes and workshops available to our community this year. It’s an amazing array of opportunities for arts recreation. So check it out, there really is something for everyone. We’ve decided to really come to the table by meeting the needs of the community. They’re asking for more classes and more opportunities and we’re providing them.”   Klassen adds that classes fill up quickly, and he encourages residents to register soon.   With “Fiddler on the Roof” rehearsals beginning soon, Klassen says there is already a lot of excitement around the project.   “Which has started a buzz in the community. We are having such a good time this year, it’s off to such a great start, and we’re just happy to be a part of such a large, amazing community, here in the southeast, that really embraces arts and culture recreation.” Concert tickets and T-shirts can be purchased by contacting the staff at the Steinbach Arts Council at 304 2nd Street, Steinbach, or by calling 204-346-1077.

SAC Presents Powerful Stories Through Music with Orontes Guitarists

Steinbach, MB — The Steinbach Arts Council invites you to a night of classical guitar with Orontes Guitarists on November 1st. Stories of Refuge  features the Orontes Guitarists, an ensemble who began in Beirut as a group of Syrian guitarists. These artists have an incredible story of persevering through hardship and will share the music that strengthened them on their journey. They bring audiences an uplifting blend of many musical styles, including Syrian Folklore, Blues, Jazz, Flamenco, Baroque, Classical, and Latin music. Tara Schellenberg, Performing Arts Coordinator at SAC, explains why this concert will be a must-see. “I believe the story of finding hope and peace in difficult circumstances is one that all of us can relate to in one way or another. For many of us, we turn to music as a refuge in troubling times. Audiences can expect to be encouraged and inspired by the stories and exceptional music shared this evening.” Hailing from different cultural and religious traditions themselves, the ensemble is keenly aware of how music transcends the barriers between us. Expect to draw together in community, as the Orontes Guitarists share the music that has lifted their spirits amid challenges. Local collaboration brings deeper meaning to Orange Shirt Day

This September, the Steinbach Arts Council teamed up with Oakleaf Promotions to make local art a part of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.  Featured on our orange shirts is artwork by two local Métis artists, bringing extra meaning to our shirts and their significance as we acknowledge the impact that residential schools have had in Canada. “I hope these efforts encourage awareness and compassion for the Indigenous children who never returned home and survivors of residential schools,” says artist, Pierrette Sherwood. Artist, Janine Lemay-Troche reflects: “It was important for me to participate in this project to help bring awareness to what my people the Métis and other indigenous peoples, especially children, have suffered.  It was a great injustice to indigenous families to have them separated from each other and to have their children sent away.  I have a heart and passion for children, and it was an honour for me to work on creating a design for the ‘Every Child Matters‘ Orange Shirt Day.  I want to be a part of remembering the lost children and the survivors of residential schools and help their families find healing.” Wearing an orange shirt is symbolic—it’s a powerful statement of resilience, reconciliation, and remembrance. The orange shirt itself represents the story of Phyllis Webstad, a third-generation residential school survivor, who had her new orange shirt taken away on her first day at a residential school, symbolizing the stripping of Indigenous identity and dignity. “By partnering with a Steinbach business, we were able to make ‘local shirts’ possible. We believe it’s important to celebrate artists from the southeast and build strong relationships. This was one way we felt we could help—building a deeper connection to the intent of Orange Shirt Day, which is to recognize the impact that residential schools have had on First Nations, Métis, and Inuit families across Canada,” says David Klassen, Executive Director of the Steinbach Arts Council. Artists: Pierrette Sherwood, a French-Canadian Métis artist with roots to the Cree Nation, transforms reclaimed metals into captivating art. Her work, which spans sculpture, mosaic, and assemblage, has gained local and national attention. Pierette’s upcoming solo exhibit at the Prairie Fusion Gallery (Portage la Prairie, MB) in November 2024 will showcase her innovative approach to art and storytelling. Janine Lemay-Troche, proudly identifying as Red River Métis is the great-great-niece of Louis Riel, Manitoba’s founder and first Premier. An accomplished artist, quilter, and ribbon skirt maker, Janine dedicates her craft to sharing her rich French/Métis heritage with future generations. Klassen says, “Many of us are taking ‘first steps’ toward Reconciliation, and by demonstrating a desire to learn and engage, we are brought closer to restored relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities. We believe that engaging with art helps us appreciate different perspectives, encouraging understanding and empathy, and this was one way we could continue creating a community that understands each other.” All proceeds from this project will be donated to Pathways of Healing, an initiative of the Southern Chief’s Organization Inc.

SteinbachOnline: Steinbach Arts Council shares statistics on their growth over the last 6 years.

This article was originally published on SteinbachOnline.com: https://steinbachonline.com/articles/steinbach-arts-council-shares-statistics-on-their-growth-over-the-last-6-years Photo Courtesy of SteinbachOnline.com The Steinbach Arts Council (SAC) presented in front of Steinbach City Council at Tuesday’s Strategic Priorities Committee (SPC) meeting.     SAC Executive Director David Klassen gives a snapshot of the organization and the work they do in the community.   He describes SAC as an organization that focuses on clear strategic priorities that support their mandate, which is to develop and support community arts and arts organizations, provide resources, and connect our arts community with each other and with all levels of government.   “We have become a hub for community programs, drawing people from many surrounding communities who want to take advantage of what Manitoba’s third largest city has to offer,” he says. “We strive to mentor young students, develop instructors and bring community together through our programming, creating opportunities for individuals to engage right here in their home city.”  Klassen says the arts impact our community by developing life skills like leadership, work ethic, creative and critical thinking, while also promoting mental and emotional wellness.   “Participating in the arts helps us appreciate different perspectives, encouraging, understanding, and empathy. Our goal is to provide more opportunities for everyone in and around Steinbach to experience sense of community, personal development, and belonging.”  SAC Board Chair Michelle Hillyard says in recent years coming out of the pandemic, they have seen substantial growth at the SAC.  “Both in the numbers of people coming through these doors each day, and the number of programs we are offering in the community.”  Klassen adds that in 2018, SAC ran over 60 programs and about 8 concerts.  Since then, they have experienced massive growth.  “In 2024, we proudly tell people that we run over 140 classes, workshops, and concerts for all ages.”  He says when he began his role in 2019 as SAC’s Director of Performing Arts, he researched similar arts organizations across Canada.   He found that many organizations focused on one or two areas.  “Like performing arts, training at a dance school, or a gallery and visual arts classes, or just concert presentations. SAC does all of those things under one roof, and we continue to grow and adapt with the increasingly diverse population.”  He informs that on a weekly basis, they open their doors to approximately 1,100 people, resulting in roughly 1,600 hours of direct contact with community members.   “In 2018, we may have seen 800 or 900 registrations versus 1500 by the end of 2023. That means that the numbers at the end of our most recent fiscal year, 2024, would be even greater.”  Many people have moved from other cities, provinces, and countries to Steinbach and area.  Klassen says that like the City of Steinbach, SAC celebrates culture, heritage and diversity.  “We find that newcomers to this community make SAC one of their first stops looking for opportunities for their families. We find that families are looking for financial support, and that trend is increasing along with the demand for a balanced variety of recreational opportunities, affordability, and accessibility.   He informs studies show that participating in arts activities create stronger connections between people.   “If we don’t keep up, we risk losing a vital point of contact for many in our City.”

2024 Season to start with new Beer & Wings fundraising event

The Steinbach Arts Council is excited to announce a new fundraising event that will take place on Thursday, September 26, 2024, kicking off our 45th anniversary season. “After many years of hosting a fall wine tasing event, we’ve had several requests to incorporate an event featuring beer,” says David Klassen, Executive Director of the Steinbach Arts Council.  “It’s a great opportunity to throw a party, while raising funds for a great cause.” Manitoba Country Music Association Roots Artist Of The Year nominee, Jaryn Friesen, will perform, while guests enjoy an end of summer “patio party” with craft beer provided by The Public Brewhouse and Gallery, and wings from Smitty’s Restaurant.  Event Sponsor, Loewen Body Shop, will lend their state-of-the-art body shop as the venue. The space will be transformed into a patio setting – the perfect place to gather for a fall event.  SAC’s new event puts a unique spin on bringing people together with a simple purpose – to help arts and culture programming thrive in the southeast.  Klassen explains, “One of our greatest responsibilities is to make sure that high quality arts and culture programming remains accessible for those who live in our region.  This event will allow us to raise additional funds that will go toward our kids’ bursary programs, making sure that we can offer accessible programming for anyone who wants it.  Eliminating cost barriers is crucial, and we believe that this is something that our community will want to support.” Event Info: Thursday, September 26, 2024 8:00pm Loewen Body Shop Individual tickets $30, includes a concert, and 1 beer and a serving of wings. Available at Steinbach Arts Council, or by visiting our website at SteinbachArts.ca Tickets are limited. If you can’t attend this year’s fundraiser, consider donating to support kids’ bursaries at SAC. ##  Contact: David Klassen, Executive DirectorE-mail: dklassen@steinbacharts.ca Phone: 204-346-1077
